Minerals Management Service (MMS) has signed a
1-year cooperative agreement with the University of Alabama, Huntsville
that will improve meteorological air quality models that assess
atmospheric conditions in the Gulf of Mexico. These models will assist
researchers in their future findings relating to various characteristics
of the atmosphere.

Have you ever wondered about the offshore structures that process, store, and transport natural gas for oil and gas production? A new MMS report, OCS-Related Infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico Fact Book, examines historic data to identify upcoming trends in the construction, use and retirement of OCS-related infrastructures. MMS will use information obtained in this report to
produce environmental impact statements and make permitting decisions
concerning offshore activities.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan, industry continues to assess the damage to oil and gas infrastructure on the Outer Continental Shelf of the Gulf of Mexico. (9/17/2004)

On a normal day in the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf 4,000 platforms, 33 thousand miles of pipeline and between 25 thousand and 30 thousand workers are involved in the production of offshore oil and natural gas. (9/17/2004)

The Atlantic hurricane season comes as an annual rite of passage for
the offshore oil and gas industry. MMS is working with industry to reduce
the potential for nature to destroy offshore facilities through a
comprehensive hurricane risk assessment of all offshore oil and gas
facilities in the Gulf of Mexico region.

The MMS recently published new regulations in the Federal Register designed to promote production from “marginal” oil and gas properties while reducing administrative costs to lease holders and to the Federal government.
Ivan, a rare category 5 hurricane, is expected to cross the western edge of Cuba on Monday and enter the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday having veered west from its previous path toward Florida. (9/13/2004)
MMS awarded a three-year, $1.73 million contract to the Center for Scientific Investigation and Higher Education in Ensenada (CICESE) Mexico, to record ocean currents throughout the water column over the outer continental shelf and slope. (9/09/04)
Deborah Gibbs Tschudy has been named Deputy Associate Director for the Minerals Revenue Management Program by MRM Associate Director Lucy Querques Denett. Ms. Gibbs Tschudy will be replacing former Deputy Associate Director Milton K. Dial, who retired from government service September 3. (9/07/04)
Several major companies were awarded contracts for approximately 14,300 barrels per day of Royalty in Kind (RIK) crude oil in an August sale conducted by the MMS and the State of Louisiana. The sale is the third RIK oil sale conducted jointly by the State of Louisiana and the MMS since March 2003. (9/02/2004)
Recognizing the high level of responsibility associated with offshore regulatory programs, the Department of the Interior’s Executive Resource Board has elevated a key Minerals Management Service position to Senior Executive Service status. MMS veteran Bud Danenberger has been selected to fill the position of Chief of Offshore Engineering and Operations because of his demonstrated leadership skills and extensive experience in safety and regulatory issues within the offshore program.
