The National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports research and research training through institute-sponsored fellowships and by administering fellowship and grant programs for certain other organizations. The National Cancer Institute and the Fogarty International Center of the NIH have bilateral exchange programs (see separate listings under National Cancer Institute and Fogarty International Center). Contact individuals at the end of this listing for more information.

Fields of Study: Biomedical and behavioral research.

Purpose: To provide training or research experience in an institution abroad.

The NIH supports research and research training through several mechanisms. Some of these mechanisms allow for a foreign research experience as a special situation with justification. In all cases, there should be a clear scientific reason for seeking an assignment abroad, and the research and training assignment or request must describe the advantages of the facilities and/or research opportunities at the foreign site. Institute program staff should be consulted whenever special assignments are to be made to foreign laboratories or institutions. The institute must give prior approval if a principal investigator plans an absence of more than three months.
