Two Nodes Merge Together

As of October 1, 2004, CoastWatch has a new Node called the Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico Regional Node. The same great products for the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico are now available through the new regional node.

Hurricane Jeanne over Florida

DODS now available for HDF products

The Distributed Oceanographic Data System (DODS) was deployed on the CoastWatch webserver for HDF products, both CWHDF and HDF-EOS. DODS is a software framework that allows for simple access to remote data. A link called "DODS HDF Access" will be listed with the available data formats, after the product and image of choice have been selected.

Hurricane Frances over Florida

As Hurricane Frances moved towards Florida, CoastWatch continued to monitor each new position with the latest passes from the POES satellites. See the view over Florida on September 5 .

Ocean Product Server for SeaWiFS Only

The CoastWatch Ocean Product Server is now providing only SeaWiFS ocean color data. The GOES SST, AVHRR SST, and Ocean Surface Winds products are no longer be available through that server. These products can be found on this website, using Product Search.

Browsing using Mapserver

Mapserver is now available for GeoTiFF browsing for all data streams! After selecting the product and image of choice, there will be a link listed with the available data formats called "Explore this Tiff in Mapserver." Please let us know if you experience any problems with this new feature.

CoastWatch exhibits for the Maury Project/ NOAA Open House

On Tuesday, July 20, CoastWatch and NODC personnel exhibited for NESDIS for the teachers of the Maury Project. These science teachers, from all over the country, were very enthusiastic to learn more about satellite data, NESDIS and NOAA. For the past several years, NOAA has been a part of the American Meteorological Society's Maury Project , as one of their field trip destinations. The teachers selected for this project take what they've learned back to the classroom and "teach the teachers." This helps NOAA to reach a wider audience.

Anonymous FTP Server

CoastWatch now has an Anonymous FTP server available for retrieving AVHRR and MODIS data. Other CoastWatch products will be available soon. Please email Shawna.Karlson@noaa.gov with any questions or problems regarding access to this server.

CW Utilities version 3.1.7

A new release of the CoastWatch utilities is now available from CoastWatch Utilites. There are several new features in the 3.1.7 release which include:
  • Integration of the CoastWatch Data Analysis Tool (CDAT).
  • GeoTIFF Output.
  • Easier self-installing packages.
  • and many more...

    New GOES Product

    CoastWatch has a new product for its users! GOES "global" consists of the entire merged GOES-10 and GOES-12 satellite footprint. This product can be accessed from the Product Search page, by selecting "global" as the region.

    National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Conference

    Another successful conference!! CoastWatch teamed up with other NOAA offices for the NSTA National Conference in Atlanta. This venue brought thousands of science teachers from all over the country and provided a great opportunity to gather information on NOAA, NESDIS, and of course, CoastWatch. Additional information about NSTA can be found at their NSTA website. See you there, next year!

    Winds Now Available Here

    The CoastWatch Ocean Surface Wind products are now available on this website. Use the "Product Search" to browse the most recent data globally or by specific regions.

    New Data Regions and Availability

    Attention SeaWiFs ocean color users! Now the SeaWiFs public browse products are available from this main website. Use the "Product Search" to the left to find SeaWiFs and other CoastWatch products.

    CoastWatch has also expanded the MODIS coverage. The new areas include the North Atlantic and Equatorial Atlantic sectors, as well as the Equatorial Pacific Basin. These regions are currently available via the Anonymous FTP server in GeoTIFF format, and will be available soon through this website.

    Presence at Ocean Research Conference

    At the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, CoastWatch set up a booth at the 2004 Ocean Research Conference. With approximately 30 other exhibitors, this co-sponsored conference by the American Society of Limnology & Oceanography and The Oceanography Society was a success. Topical themes included ocean color observations, observing systems, coral reefs and many more.

    Still have Terra!

    CoastWatch users need not worry.. as Terra/MODIS products are still available. As of February 1, 2004, NASA will stop generating Terra/MODIS ocean color products for an undetermined amount of time, however, this DOES NOT impact CoastWatch. We will continue to process the Terra/MODIS data, along with Aqua/MODIS, and make it available in near real-time.

    Presence at the American Meteorological Society Meeting

    CoastWatch worked with other components of NOAA to create a new exhibit for the 84th annual AMS meeting in Seattle, Wa. The exhibit was a huge hit, showing a unified agency and focusing on the four major components of NOAA's Strategic Plan.

    New Release CW Utilities 3.1.6

    A new release of the CoastWatch utilities is now available from CoastWatch Utilites. The new features in the 3.1.6 release include:
  • Support for the AIX and IRIX operating systems.
  • A new coverage tool that generates a graphical image of data coverage based on a set of dat files.
  • Bug fixes for operating under Microsoft Windows.

    New Look and New Files for AVHRR

    Look! POES/AVHRR images have a new appearance! The processing involved uses the latest version of the CoastWatch Format Utilities to create web-viewable PNGs. And now, these images are also available in GeoTIFF and HDF formats. Use the "Product Search" to see for yourself.
