At Area D of the Peconic River Project, work stopped to rescue a snapping turtle hibernating in the shallow mud. The turtle was moved to the other side of the river bed where it quickly dug a new place to bed down.

The Environmental Restoration Directorate was established in 1991 to oversee Brookhaven National Laboratory's Superfund activities. Our staff does two jobs:

- We manage the cleanup of known contaminated areas.
- We investigate and clean up, when necessary, any potentially contaminated areas.

Our goal is to protect human health and the environment.
