The AVON-NCI Progress for Patients (PFP) Awards Program In 2002, the Avon Foundation (AVON) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced the AVON-NCI Progress for Patients (PFP) Awards Program, a special private-public partnership to fund innovative research for preventing, detecting, diagnosing, and treating breast cancer. AVON pledged $20 million to fund breast cancer research over 5 years through a limited competition involving institutions with NCI Cancer Center Support and Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grants. The NCI will continue to contribute funds, conduct peer reviews, and monitor project progress.
