Organizations of interest to researchers and evaluators:
- The National Association of Injury Control Research Centers
An organization devoted to promoting scholarly activity in injury control, the Association addresses issues relevant to the prevention, acute care and rehabilitation of traumatic injury through multiple activities in research; research dissemination; program development and evaluation; consultation; and education and training.
- National Institute of Mental Health
Suicide Research Consortium
This group of NIMH scientists coordinates program development in suicide research across the Institute, stimulates and monitors extramural research on suicide, and disseminates science-based information on suicidology.
- National Center for Injury Prevention and Control
Suicide Prevention Research Center
With support from the NCIPC, the Trauma Institute of the University of Nevada School (UNSOM) of Medicine has established a Suicide Prevention research Center organized around four core areas of activity: administration and program and policy development; methodology development and program evaluation; research; and education and dissemination.
- Suicide Research and Prevention Unit, Norway
The Suicide Research and Prevention Unit was established in 1996 at the University of Oslo. This national resource center in suicidology funds research, knowledge dissemination, and counseling. It offers postgraduate study in suicide prevention and publishes a Norwegian journal called Suicidologi.
- Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention
The aim of the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP), located at Griffith University in Brisbane, Queensland, is to promote, conduct, and support comprehensive intersectoral programs of research activities for the prevention of suicidal behavior in Australia.
- University of Oxford Centre for Suicide Research
The Centre for Suicide Research aims to conduct quality research, disseminate research findings, collaborate with others in preventing suicide, and provide training opportunities for researchers.
- The Evaluation Center at HSRI
This site provides technical assistance to states and others on evaluation, especially related to mental health system change. It lists materials on evaluation available for sale and describes other services related to mental health evaluation.
Information for Researchers:
- SafetyLit, San Diego State University
SafetyLit provides weekly abstracts of publications relevant to preventing injuries, including those that are self-inflicted.
- Developing a Research Agenda for Suicide Survivors
This paper, developed by scientists at the National Institute of Mental Health, outlines some of the questions and issues that may serve as a framework for studying the needs of suicide survivors.
- CDC Wonder
This interactive and searchable data base, developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides morbidity and mortality data on many types of injury and disease.
- MEDLINEplus
MEDLINEplus, a service of the National Library of Medicine, is designed to help you find appropriate, authoritative health information.
- Selected Reviews of Suicide Research (2001)
This list of review articles was compiled by the NIMH Suicide Research Consortium, whose members have found the articles useful when providing technical assistance to grant applicants.
- Notable References in Suicidology
Prepared by the American Association of Suicidology, this bibliography consists of books and articles that have been determined to be of special merit. The references are organized under topic headings to facilitate finding specific types of information on suicide risk.
- Abstracts of Currently Funded NIMH Research Grants Pertaining to Suicidal Behavior
These abstracts of suicide research projects funded in fiscal year 2001 by the National Institute of Mental Health serve as examples of the range and quality of scientific research on suicide supported by NIMH.
- Issues to Consider in Intervention Research with Persons at High Risk for Suicidality
Researchers conducting intervention research on suicide must consider safety challenges inherent in such research. The intent of this document is to suggest ways to minimize risk in the development of intervention trials and to provide guidance to Institutional Review Boards and Data and Safety Monitoring Boards that must review and monitor these studies.
- A Review of Suicide Assessment Measures for Intervention Research with Adults and Older Adults
This NIMH-funded review provides a systematic examination of the psychometric properties of measures of suicidal ideation and behavior for younger and older adults.
- Reviews of Measures of Suicidal Behavior: Assessment of Suicidal Behaviors and Risk Among Children and Adolescents
Instruments that have been used to evaluate suicidal behaviors in children and adolescents are reviewed in this NIMH-funded document.
- Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects: Current Federal Funding of Biomedical Research
CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects) is a searchable database of federally funded biomedical research projects currently being conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions. The CRISP interface may be used to search for scientific concepts, emerging trends and techniques, or to identify specific projects and/or investigators.
- National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center
The National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center (NYVPRC) was established as a central source of information on prevention and intervention programs, publications, research, and statistics on violence prevention and suicide.
Information for Program Evaluators
- Suicide Prevention: Prevention Effectiveness and Evaluation
This booklet addresses the need for applying the principles of prevention effectiveness and for incorporating evaluation into suicide prevention program planning and implementation.
- Evaluation of Suicide Prevention Programs
The importance of evaluation for suicide prevention and steps to conducting such an evaluation are discussed in this appendix to the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention.
