Regional Biological Knowledge Base of Web Resources

SAIN is continuously mining the web to maintain the steady growth of the database of web resources available to users through this website. This site is intended to make all the regional biological information on the web available to users . The "Regional Biota", "Ecological Topics" and "Information Resources" categories of the tool bar above guides users through all the categories of information that SAIN staff has been organizing for users. If you have suggestions or questions contact Franciel Azpurua-Linares.

Southern Appalachian Volunteer Environmental Monitoring (SAVEM) Aquatic Biota Survey for the Upper Little Tennessee River

Southern Appalachian Man and The Biosphere (SAMAB) has been training volunteers from around the region to monitor the ecological health of this community. The Fish Sampling Reports and the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) Reports that can be created through this site show results of the monitoring process, which are being used as biological indicators of watershed health in the Upper Little Tennessee River. For more information contact PJ Nabors.

Southern Appalachian Volunteer Environmental Monitoring (SAVEM) Data Sets (Samples)

The Southern Appalachian Information Node has partnered with SAMAB to visualize the SAVEM data sets. This page provides the user with access to some of the GIS layers used to build all the SAVEM maps. For further information contact PJ Nabors.

Conservancy Outreach

SAIN's Conservancy Outreach project has expanded well beyond initial inventory and mapping efforts to assist land conservancies. SAIN successfully provided GIS support and geodatabase design to a critical core of land conservancies in the southeast Tennessee/northwest Georgia area (Tennessee River Gorge Trust (TRGT), North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy (NCCC), and the Lula Lake Land Trust (LLLT). Conservancy land managers from collaborating organizations are using this information to determine sensitive habitats, predict site suitability, and to schedule routine inventory activities based on the analysis of biotic and abiotic datasets.

Re-engineering of Tennessee Animal Biogeographic System (TABS) and Tennessee Aquatic Data System (TADS) & other TWRA-NBII Collaborations

The Southern Appalachian Information Node has been working with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) to convert the Tennessee Animal Biogeographic System (TABS) and the Tennessee Aquatic Data System (TADS) into query-based and web accessible systems. So far the node has been focusing on developing the data model for migration and data preparation. Contact Shelaine Curd-Hetrick for more information.

Wildlife Management Cooperative to Control the Invasive European Wild Boar (SUS SCROFA) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

SAIN and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have been working together to digitize twenty-six years of control effort of legacy data. Hog control efforts in the park are expected to continue in perpetuity. SAIN plans to complete a fully functional management system to provide mapping and management assistance. Information and a PowerPoint presentation about the project are available at http://invasivespecies.nbii.gov/projects/boars/boars.html. You can also Download a project map (.pdf, 1.2Mb), and Read about the project in ArcUser Online.

Contact Robert Keller for more information.

Southeastern Museum Collection Network Support

The node is working with regional museums and specimen collections to identify collections in the region and help to make their databases web-enable while incorporating the standards and protocols established and maintained by the DiGIR toolkit and the Darwin Core. We are currently working with the University of Tennessee at Knoxville Herbarium, Lincoln Memorial University and the Mammal Collection of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. We invite you to participate in this project, contact Franciel Azpurua-Linares or Robert Keller for more information.
