Quality and other technical information related to this item:
1993
Reinterview data showed moderate inconsistency for categories 'b', 'c', and 'd' and fairly
reliable consistency for categories 'f' and 'g'. Prior to editing, nearly 40 percent of the
NSCG mail respondents included an "other" category, compared with 5.6 percent of the SDR
respondents. Although category 'g' ("laid off" or "job terminated") was intended to capture
involuntary job departures, many respondents indicated an involuntary job departure in "other"
(the company had been closed, sold, bought out, or gone bankrupt). Frequent "other" responses
that were not back-coded included: (1) moved or relocated, (2) health (NSCG only), (3) job
security (NSCG only), and (4) funding (SDR only).
This question asked respondents to mark a "yes" or "no" response for each of 9 different
response categories. Some respondents only marked the "yes" responses, converting this into
a "mark all that apply" question. Consequently, item nonresponse on the raw, unedited NSCG
data was high, ranging from a high of 48 percent (the "other" category) to a low of 12.8 percent.
This item had high item nonresponse (8.7 percent) for even the edited SDR mail data.
