General
For the SDR, this item was not obtained directly from the survey form, but was instead obtained from the sampling frame. The Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED), an ongoing census of all U.S. doctorate recipients since 1942, was used to construct the sampling frame, and thus some information, routinely collected by the SED, such as field of study and year of degree award, was known about each respondent even before the SDR survey data was collected.
