1993
This item had low nonresponse but moderate interviewer effects. Item nonresponse for "father's level of education" was less than one percent for the NSCG, 1.4 percent for the SDR, and 1.0 percent for the NSRCG. Item nonresponse for "mother's education level" was less than 1.0 percent for the NSCG and NSRCG and 1.6 percent for the SDR. Moderate mode effects were evident. In the mail version, "father's education" had a higher frequency of "some college" and a lower frequency of "high school" than in CATI. For "mother's education", the mail version had a greater frequency of "less than high school" and a lower frequency of "some college" than in CATI. For SDR respondents, data is obtained from the SDR questionnaire.

General
Parent’s education information is obtained from various sources, depending on the survey year and the year in which the respondent entered the SESTAT system, as described below:

SDR respondents:


For 1993 respondents, information on parent’s education was obtained from the 1993 SDR. survey instrument.


For 1995 or 1997 SDR respondents, parent’s education was derived from two sources. For those respondents who had also responded in 1993, the reported 1993 value was carried over to 1995 and 1997. For respondents who appeared in the SDR for the first time in either 1995 or 1997, parent’s education was derived from the Doctorate Records File (DRF) submitted by NORC.

NSCG or NSRCG respondents:


Parent’s education data was based on values reported when they first entered the SESTAT system.
