Quality and other technical information related to this item:
1993
Overall, the reinterview study found the SESTAT questions were quite reliable. This question,
however, was the one item with a fairly high level of response variance. Although this question
appears factual--asking for the reasons why someone changed career fields-- the reasoning process
for such a decision is subject to change over time. In addition, respondents could report reasons
for any one of several time periods: (1) most recent reasons; (2) the original reasons; or (3) all
reasons ever.
This question asked respondents to indicate "yes" or "no" for each of the seven reasons listed.
Some mail respondents marked only the "yes" responses, converting this item into a "mark all
that apply" question. Consequently item nonresponse on the raw, unedited NSCG data was high
(ranging from a low of 9.8 percent to a high of 55 percent for "other") when compared to the
less than one percent item nonresponse on any response category on both the NSRCG (CATI) and
edited SDR mail data. After applying the SESTAT editing rules, item nonresponse on the NSCG
was comparably reduced.
