Quality and other technical information related to this item:
NSRCG behavioral coding indicated "teaching" (category 't') and "production" (category 'I') were the most problematic response categories. Reinterview data showed "sales, purchasing and marketing" (category 'k') to be the most consistent. Moderate inconsistencies were found among these categories: "applied research" ('b'), "basic research" ('c'), "development" ('e'), "employee relations" ('g'), "quality or productivity management" ('l'), and "other" ('n'). Some respondents included on-the-job training as "teaching" and some perceived "production" to be manufacturing. "Teaching" also created mode effects among non-scientists and engineers.
This question had a higher than average percentage of "other" responses, some of which were back-coded, while others were not. Examples of the high frequency "other" responses and their "back-code status" included: "Back-Coded": counseling to professional services ( 'j'), customer service and public relations to sales, purchasing, or marketing ( 'k'), supervision and project management to management and administration ( 'h') and "Not Back-Coded": case management, social work, clerical, law enforcement, training, consulting, writing.
