December 8: Warren Township Health Consultation in Ohio

December 8: A public health consultation on the Warren Township site in Warren, Ohio, has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as an urgent public health hazard.

December 3: ATSDR staff to hold community meeting and question and answer session in Marietta, Ohio regarding air quality issues near the former Union Carbide facility on Route 7 in Washington County, Ohio.

December 3: Sierra Army Depot Air Emissions No Apparent Public Health Hazard

December 3: The public health consultation on air emissions at Sierra Army Depot in Lassen County, Calif., finds the emissions pose no apparent public health hazard.

November 25: Former Nansemond Ordnance Public Health Assessment in Virginia

November 25: A public health assessment on the former Nansemond Ordnance National Priorities List site in Suffolk, Va., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as no apparent public health hazard and will discuss its findings at a meeting on Dec. 4, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

November 20: Oak Ridge Public Health Assessment in Tennessee

November 20: The Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee in Oak Ridge, Tenn., will hold a committee meeting from 12:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 2. ATSDR will address the findings of the public health assessment on the Y-12 uranium releases.

November 4: A public health consultation on the Atlantic Station Redevelopment site in Atlanta, Ga., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment. The agency categorized the site as no apparent public health hazard and has extended the public comment period through Nov. 30.

November 3: Neodesha Refinery Public Meeting in Kansas

November 3: A public meeting and availability session concerning the Neodesha Refinery site in Neodesha, Kan., will be held on Nov. 13 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. ATSDR representatives will be available to discuss the results of its public health consultation regarding the refinery site.

October 29: Atlantic Station Redevelopment Public Meeting in Georgia

October 29: A public meeting and availability session concerning the Atlantic Station Redevelopment site in Atlanta, Ga., will be held on Oct. 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Input gathered during the meeting will be included in the final public health consultation document.

October 28: View-Master Health Consultation in OregonExiting ATSDR.

October 28: ATSDR has released the final public health consultation for the View-Master factory site in Beaverton, Ore.Exiting ATSDR. The health consultation was prepared by the Oregon Department of Human ServicesExiting ATSDR. under a cooperative agreement with ATSDR.

October 27: ATSDR finds no past, current or apparent future public health hazard in its public health assessment for the Fort Wainwright site in Fairbanks, Alaska.

October 23: WTC Health Registry Issues Initial Enrollment Report

October 23: The WTC Health Registry released its initial report providing demographic information on 6,313 people who enrolled during the first weeks of data collection.

October 22: Agana Power Plant Health Assessment in Guam

October 22: A public health assessment on the Agana Power Plant site in Guam has been issued by ATSDR. The agency finds that the chemical exposures from the Agana Power Plant site pose no apparent public health hazard to residents.

October 21: Weyerhaeuser Pulp and Paper Mill Health Consultation in North Carolina

October 21: A public health consultation on the Weyerhaeuser Pulp and Paper Mill site in Plymouth, N.C., has been issued by ATSDR for public review. On the basis of lack of data, the agency has categorized the Weyerhaeuser site as an indeterminate public health hazard.

October 21: Comment Period Extended for Carpenter-Snow Creek Health Assessment in Montana

October 21: The public comment period for the public health assessment for the Carpenter-Snow Creek Mining District site in Neihart, Mont., has been extended to Nov. 7. ATSDR has classified the site as a public health hazard.

October 20: W.R. Grace Public Meeting in Massachusetts

 

October 20: A public meeting and availability session concerning the W.R. Grace site in Acton, Mass., will be held on Oct. 28 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Input gathered during the meeting will be included in the final public health assessment document.

October 17: NAB Little Creek Final Health Assessment in Virginia

October 17: A final public health assessment for the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Little Creek in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Va., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency has categorized the NAB Little Creek site as no apparent public health hazard.

October 16: Dover Air Force Base Health Assessment in Delaware

October 16: A public health assessment on the Dover Air Force Base (DAFB) site in Kent County near Dover, Del., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment. The agency has categorized the DAFB site as no apparent public health hazard.

October 15: ORRHES Meeting in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

October 15: ATSDR will hold a Federal Advisory Committee meeting of the Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES) in Oakridge, Tenn., on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

October 8: Lawrence Livermore NL 300 Meeting in California

October 8: A public meeting and public availability session concerning the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory 300 site in Livermore, Calif., will be held by ATSDR on Oct. 16. The agency's work on the site and possible public health concerns will be addressed.

October 8: Sun Oil Co. Meeting in Oregon, Ohio

October 8: ATSDR representatives will hold a public availability session on Oct. 14 to discuss upcoming air sampling that will be conducted in the community near the Sun Oil Co. site in Oregon, Ohio.

October 8: Metachem Final Health Assessment in Delaware

October 8: A final public health assessment on contamination associated with the Metachem site in Newcastle, Del., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency has categorized the Metachem site as no health hazard to residents.

October 2: Lawrence Livermore Final Health Assessment in California

October 2: The final public health assessment on plutonium 239 sludge at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Site (LLNL) in Livermore, Calif., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency has categorized the LLNL site as no apparent public health hazard.

September 30: Gulfport, Miss., Residents Invited to Public Availability Session

September 30: ATSDR representatives will meet one-on-one with community members concerned about possible health effects related to the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Miss. The public availability session will be held Oct. 7 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Isiah Fredericks Community Center, 3312 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Gulfport.

September 23: Comment Period Extended for Colonie Site in New York

September 23: ATSDR has extended the public comment period for the public health consultation on the Colonie site in Albany, N.Y. to Nov. 3. [Click here for the main document, Figure 1, and Figure 2.]

September 23: North Railroad Avenue Plume Health Assessment in New Mexico

September 23: A final public health assessment on the North Railroad Avenue Plume site in Española, N.M., has been issued by ATSDR for public review on Sept. 23. The agency has categorized the site as no apparent health hazard for current exposures and public health hazard for past exposures.

September 19: Health Assessment for Eastland Woolen Mill Site in Maine

September 19: A public meeting will be held Sept. 25 to discuss the results of ATSDR's public health assessment at the Eastland Woolen Mill site in Corinna, Maine, near Bangor. No apparent public health hazard currently exists at the former woolen mill. However, the site posed a public health hazard in the past.

September 17: Martin County Coal Co. Health Consultation in Inez, Ky.

September 17: A public health consultation on the Martin County Coal Co. site in Inez, Ky., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment through Oct. 14. The agency finds that the site presents no apparent health hazard.

September 16: National Asbestos Exposure Review Documents Issued

September 16: ATSDR has released public health consultations and fact sheets for the first five of the National Asbestos Exposure Review's (NAER) 28 Phase One sites. Public health consultations, fact sheets and media announcements relating to the following sites now are available. Click on any city to see the information relating to it: Beltsville, Md.; Denver, Colo.; Minot, N.D.; Santa Ana, Calif.; and West Chicago, Ill.

September 15: Vieques Health Assessment Issued in Puerto Rico

September 15: A final public health assessment on the Isla de Vieques site in Puerto Rico has been issued by ATSDR. The agency has found that exposure to air contaminants poses no apparent health hazards.

September 11: Tooele Army Depot Health Assessment in Utah

September 11: A final public health assessment on the Tooele Army Depot site near Salt Lake City in Tooele, Utah, has been issued by ATSDR. The agency found that exposures to groundwater and air contaminants pose no apparent health hazards.

September 11: Health Consultation Conducted in Galena, Alaska

September 11: In ATSDR's public health consultation issued for the Galena Airport site in Galena, Alaska, the agency did not identify issues that pose an imminent public health threat. The health consultation outlines environmental issues and health concerns that will be evaluated by ATSDR in a future public health assessment (PHA).

September 9: Final Health Consultation Issued for Gas Stations in Palm City, Fla.

September 9: The final public health consultation released by ATSDR on the Speedway #8366 and Jack's Service Center gas stations in Palm City, Fla., classifies the site as an indeterminate public health hazard.

September 9: Norfolk Naval Shipyard Health Assessment Available for Comment

September 9: In the agency's public health assessment issued for comment through Oct. 10, ATSDR finds the possible contaminants at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Repository in Portsmouth, Va., to be no apparent health hazard or an indeterminate health hazard.

September 5: ATSDR Announces World Trade Center Health Registry

September 5: ATSDR joined the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to launch the WTC Health Registry, a comprehensive survey of those most directly exposed to the events of 9/11. The 20-year registry will track the physical and mental health of participants and will provide a broad picture of the short-term and long-term health effects of 9/11.

September 4: Alliance Landfill Health Consultation in Pennsylvania

September 4: A public health consultation on the Alliance Landfill site near Scranton in Taylor Borough, Pa., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment through Oct. 13. On the basis of a lack of data, the agency has categorized the Alliance Landfill as an indeterminate public health hazard.

September 3: Air Sampling Recommended at Pennzoil-Calumet Refinery in Shreveport, La.

September 3: A public health consultation on the Calumet Lubricants/Pennzoil-Quaker State Refinery Site in Shreveport, La., recommends more air sampling for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). ATSDR finds the community's exposure to VOCs is an indeterminate public health hazard. The document is available for public review and comment at local repositories from Sept. 3 through Oct. 6.

August 27: Court awards ATSDR and other federal agencies reimbursement of costs incurred in providing public health and clean-up assistance related to asbestos contamination in Libby, Montana.

August 25: Dr. Falk to lead CDC's NCEH/ATSDR Exiting ATSDR.

August 25: Dr. Henry Falk has been appointed as the new directorExiting ATSDR. for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Environmental Health and will continue as assistant administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

August 25: No Apparent Public Health Hazard at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant

August 25: If any exposure to beryllium and depleted uranium occurred at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP) in Middletown, Iowa, it was not at levels significant enough to cause a public health hazard, according to a new health consultation released by ATSDR. The document will be available for public comment at local repositories, including the IAAAP Visitor Reception Center, through Oct. 3, 2003.

August 22: Consultation on Colonie site in Albany, N.Y.

August 22: A public health consultation concludes that there is no apparent public health hazard for current exposures at the Colonie site in Albany, N.Y. The document is available for public review and comment from Sept. 2 through Oct. 3.

August 21: ORRHES Meeting to be held in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

August 21: A meeting of Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES) will be held August 26 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The agenda includes a presentation and discussion on the Health Education Needs Assessment.

August 14: Public Health Assessment on Tanapag Village, Saipan

August 14: ATSDR finds that exposure to PCBs in Tanapag Village in Saipan, which is located in the Northern Marianas Islands, does not present a current, past or future public health hazard. The public health assessment document will be available for public review and comment through Sept. 13, 2003.

August 13: No public health hazard found at Alaska's Fort Wainwright

August 13: The public has from Aug. 13 through Sept. 12 to comment on a public health assessment of the Fort Wainwright site in Fairbanks, Alaska. ATSDR finds the contaminant substances from post operations present no past, current or apparent future public health hazard.

August 12: Comment period for Montana sites

August 12: Public health assessments are available for the Carpenter-Snow Creek and Barker-Hughesville Mining Sites in Montana. Both sites are classified as public health hazards. The documents will be available for public review and comment at local repositories through Oct. 1.

August 6: Public health assessment issued for Arkansas site

August 6: ATSDR and the Arkansas Department of Health have issued a public health assessment for review and comment on the Koppers Industries Inc. site in North Little Rock, Ark. The agencies find the site to be no apparent health hazard under present site conditions.

August 1: Atlanta's Atlantic Station consultation finds no hazard

August 1: The health consultation for Atlanta's Atlantic Station redevelopment project finds there is no apparent public health hazard from contamination on the site. The document is available for public review and comment through Sept. 2.

July 31: Exposures to PCBs a public health hazard in Anniston, Ala.

July 31: A final health consultation released by ATSDR finds that PCBs in some residential soils in Anniston, Ala., present a public health hazard.

July 30: Public health assessment on UC Davis laboratory available for comment

July 30: ATSDR released a public health assessment on the Laboratory for Energy-Related Health Research/Old Campus Landfill site, on the University of California, Davis campus. The document will be available for public review and comment at local repositories from July 30 through Oct. 31, 2003.

July 25: No Public Health Hazard from Exposure to Naval Air Station Fallon Substances in Nevada

July 25: ATSDR's final public health assessment for Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon concludes there are no past, current or future public health hazards from exposures to NAS-related substances in the environment in Fallon in Churchill County, Nev.

July 25: Two Health Consultations Available for Comment in Churchill County, Nev.

July 25: ATSDR has issued two public health consultations that examine the possibility of adverse health effects from the use of tap water and pesticides in Churchill County, Nev. The documents are available for public review and comment through August 25.

July 21: Fish and shellfish in Vieques, Puerto Rico found safe to eat

July 21: The final public health assessment on the health effects from the consumption of fish and shellfish in Vieques, Puerto Rico, finds no apparent public health hazard results from normal consumption patterns.

July 17: Adverse health effects possible from contaminated groundwater in Billings, Mont.

July 17: ATSDR issued a public health assessment for the Lockwood Solvents site in Billings, Mont. that finds certain adverse health effects might have been experienced by residents exposed to contaminated groundwater.

July 16: Camp Lejeune Progress Report

July 16: The Progress Report on the Camp Lejeune, NC water contamination survey has been released. A follow-on study to review the medical records of 103 cases of specific birth defects and childhood cancers and a water modeling study are planned.

July 11: Petrolia, Pa. Residents Invited to Public Availability Session

July 11: ATSDR will hold a public availability session about the Bear Creek Chemical Area site in Petrolia, Pa. on July 15.

July 8: No health hazard found at U.S. Naval Engineering Station Lakehurst

July 8: The final public health assessment for the U.S. Naval Engineering Station Lakehurst finds there is no health hazard related to contaminants from the site.

June 30: ATSDR seeks input on exposure investigation protocol from Elmore, Ohio residents

June 30: ATSDR seeks community input on protocol for beryllium exposure investigation in Elmore, Ohio. A meeting to provide further information and answer questions from community members is scheduled for July 14.

June 27: ATSDR exposure investigation finds urgent public health hazard from hydrogen sulfide in Warren Township, Ohio.

June 27: The review and comment period for the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) public health assessment is from June 27 through August 5. ATSDR found that under normal operating conditions INEEL poses no apparent past, current or future public health hazard for the surrounding community. The facility is located near Idaho Falls, Idaho.

June 26: Public Health Consultation issued on Lead Activities in Anniston, Ala.

June 26: Final public health consultation finds that average blood lead levels for children tested in Anniston, Alabama are below national averages.

June 24: ATSDR is releasing for public review and comment a public health assessment for the Tooele Army Depot site in Tooele, Utah near Salt Lake City. The public comment period extends through July 25.

June 23: Public meeting on exposure investigation in Warren Township, Ohio

June 23: ATSDR will hold a public meeting on June 27 to discuss the results of its exposure investigation on air levels of hydrogen sulfide in Warren Township, Ohio.

June 10: Public Health Assessment on Little Creek Naval Base available for comment

June 10: ATSDR issues public health assessment for public review and comment on the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Va. The public comment period runs from June 10 to July 11.

May 28: Final public health assessment issued for Libby, Mont., site

May 28: In its final public health assessment of the Libby Asbestos National Priorities List site in Libby, Mont., ATSDR concludes residents were exposed to hazardous levels of asbestos.

May 27: Interested community members are encouraged to attend a public availability session to discuss ATSDR's public health assessment on the uranium releases from the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on June 2. ATSDR concluded that the level of uranium released from the plant does not present harmful health effects and poses no apparent health hazard.

May 27: Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee meeting

May 27: The Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES) will hold a public meeting on June 3 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Attendees will learn about the development of radiation safety standards, get an update on studies involving DOE workers and hear from ATSDR Assistant Administrator, Henry Falk, M.D.

May 27: Public meeting to review Dupont DeLisle site health consultation in DeLisle, Miss.

May 27: ATSDR will host a presentation to discuss the public health consultation concerning groundwater sampling near the DuPont DeLisle facility in DeLisle, Miss. on June 5, 2003. Community members are encouraged to attend and share any comments or concerns with ATSDR.

May 27: Comment period extended for North Railroad Avenue site

May 27: ATSDR has extended the public comment period for its public health assessment of the North Railroad Avenue plume site in Espanola, N.M., through June 20, 2003.

May 20: Public meetings to be held at Molycorp site in Questa, N.M.

May 20: ATSDR will hold a community meeting followed by a public availability session June 25 for the Molycorp Inc. site near Questa, N.M. Also, individuals can schedule an appointment to meet one-on-one with an ATSDR staff member on June 26 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Call Health Communications Specialist Debra Joseph at 1-888-422-8737, ext. 1758, to schedule an appointment. Refer to the Molycorp site when calling.

May 21: Health hazards of asbestos in vermiculite insulation described in new EPA/ATSDR brochure

May 21: ATSDR and the EPA have published an informational brochure about the potential hazards of asbestos-contaminated vermiculite insulation. The brochure provides information on how to identify these products and steps individuals can take to reduce exposure.

May 20: Public Meetings to be Held at Molycorp Site in Questa, N.M.

May 20: ATSDR will hold a community meeting followed by a public availability session June 25 for the Molycorp Inc. site near Questa, N.M. Also, ATSDR staff will be available on June 26 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to meet with individuals in the community, as requested. Community health concerns submitted during the public comment period, comments submitted to the agency, and any new environmental data will be incorporated into a revised public health assessment. Later this year, after the document is updated, a new public comment period will be established and a second draft of the PHA will be released.

May 13: The final public health assessment for the Edwards Air Force Base NPL site in Southern California finds that no adverse health effects are expected from exposures to arsenic in the water supply system, to chemical warfare materiel in subsurface soil, or to aerial dioxin releases from remediation systems.

May 7: Public Health Assessment for Taylor Lumber and Treating site in Sheridan, Ore., released for public comment

May 7: ATSDR and the Oregon Department of Human Services are releasing for public review and comment a public health assessment for the former Taylor Lumber and Treating facility site in Sheridan, Ore. Both agencies conclude the site poses no apparent public health hazard. The public comment period extends through July 17, 2003.

May 5: NAES Lakehurst (N.J.) health assessment issued

May 5: On-base and off-base residents of the 7400-acre US Naval Engineering Station site in Lakehurst, N.J. are concerned about the contaminant exposure in their neighborhoods.

May 5 : Maine: Callahan Mining Corp. site health assessment

May 5 : People Exposed to heavy metals and other contaminants at Callahan Mining Corp. site in Maine are not expected to experience adverse health effects.

May 1 : No apparent health hazard at Martin County Coal Co. site in Inez, Ky.

May 1 : In ATSDR's public health consultation, the agency concludes that there were no exposures to contaminants at levels of health concern for the Martin County Coal Co. site in Inez, Ky. ATSDR categorizes the site as not being an apparent public health hazard. The document evaluates environmental data and addresses community health concerns associated with a coal slurry spill that flooded area streams in 2000. The public comment period for the health consultation lasts through June 9, 2003.

April 29 : Preliminary study and investigation results released in Calcasieu and Lafayette, La., Parishes

April 29 : At public meetings in Westlake and Lafayette, La., ATSDR is releasing preliminary results of the agency's 2002 Louisiana Dioxin Study of Calcasieu and Lafayette Parishes and its 2001 Follow-Up Investigation. Final results and additional analysis will be presented at public meetings held in the community in summer 2003.

April 25: ATSDR's public health assessment of the Stauffer Chemical Co. site in Tarpon Springs, Fla., is available for public review and comment through June 3. Find out more about more about how the agency concluded that the site currently is not a health hazard.

April 25 : Public comment period extended on Anniston, Ala., health consultations

April 25 : ATSDR is extending the public comment periodon two public health consultations about Anniston, Ala., through May 12, 2003. The documents are the Anniston PCB Air Sampling Review and the Summary of Recent Work on Children's Blood Lead Levels.

April 23 : Salem, Mass. is site for two public availability sessions

April 23 : Community members are encouraged to share health concerns related to petitioned sites at the Witchcraft Heights and Bentley elementary schools in Salem, Mass. at a public availability session to be held April 28 at the Salem High School Library.

April 23 : Community members are invited to meet with ATSDR representatives about the agency's work and their health concerns related to the Metachem Products Superfund site at a May 1 public availability session in New Castle, Del. April 2 : ATSDR releases for public comment its public health assessment of the Stauffer Chemical Co. site ATSDR will hold two public availability sessions about the report in Tarpon Springs on April 8. Public health assessment released for Stauffer Chemical site in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

April 2: ATSDR concludes that the Stauffer Chemical Co. site in Tarpon Springs, Fla., currently is not a public health hazard. At this time, no one is being exposed to harmful levels of chemicals from the site. However, in the past the Stauffer site was a public health hazard because of harmful levels of air pollution emissions. Due to harmful levels of arsenic in on-site soil and radium in on-site slag, the Stauffer site could be a future public health hazard if the property is developed for residential use.

April 2 : ATSDR to hold public meeting about the Kerr-McGee site in Columbus, Miss.

April 2 : ATSDR will hold a public meeting and a public availability session on April 14th in Columbus, Miss., to discuss community health concerns related to that city's Kerr-McGee site.

March 17 : Public health assessment for the North Railroad Avenue Plume site in Española, N.M.

March 17 : In its public health assessment for the North Railroad Avenue Plume site in Española, N.M., ATSDR concludes that past exposure to groundwater from two wells (Bond and Jemez) that formerly supplied public water posed a public health hazard to residents of Española, but that there is currently no public health hazard from exposure to the public water supply because these wells are no longer in use. Also, ATSDR concludes that exposure to groundwater from private nondrinking water wells, soil, indoor air, sediment and surface water indicates no apparent public health hazard.

March 14 : ATSDR will hold two public availability sessions on March 20 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Louisville City Hall in Louisville, Miss., to discuss community health concerns related to the American Creosote Works, Inc. site.

March 13 : ATSDR will hold a public availability session on March 18 in Wilmington, N.C. to discuss community health concerns related to the Reasor Chemical Co. site in Castle Hayne, N.C.

March 10 : Public health assessment reports no health hazard to residents and workers at Hill AFB near Ogden, Utah.

March 10 : At the Hill Air Force Base site near Ogden, Utah, ATSDR concludes in a public health assessment (PHA) that exposure to contaminated groundwater, soil, indoor air, surface water, and fruits and vegetables from fuels and chemicals that had spilled or been released to the ground does not pose a health hazard to residents and workers of Hill AFB or surrounding communities. The public may comment on the PHA's findings through April 28.

February 26 : New Hanford project to study cardiovascular and autoimmune disease prevalence

February 26 : ATSDR launched the Hanford Birth Cohort Study, a study to determine the prevalence of autoimmune and cardiovascular disease among people who were born in and who lived in certain parts of Washington State, including the area surrounding the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Hanford, Wash.

February 24 : The New Hanford project to study cardiovascular and autoimmune disease prevalence. will begin the week of Feb. 23 and will focus on people who may have been exposed to radioactive releases from the Hanford site. ATSDR has randomly selected a sample of 2,000 people who were born in Adams, Benton, Franklin, Mason, San Juan and Whatcom counties between 1945 and 1951 and who lived in one of these six counties for at least 12 months.

February 24 : ATSDR releases results of environmental exposure pathway investigations supporting the Churchill County Leukemia Cluster Investigation in Fallon, Nev.

Feb. 24 : Air emissions determined safe at Central Landfill, Johnston, R.I. ATSDR concludes that the levels of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and hydrogen sulfide at Central Landfill in Johnston, R.I. do not present a health hazard to nearby residents. Read more about investigation results in ATSDR's public health consultation.

February 24 : ATSDR and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RI DEM) conducted an exposure investigation in Johnston, R.I., to determine whether air emissions from the Central Landfill present a public health hazard to nearby residents. ATSDR and RI DEM measured levels of air contaminants associated with landfill emissions in residential areas near the landfill. This investigation was conducted from July 2000 through May 2001.

February 13 : ATSDR released its initial public health assessment on the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif. Written comments from the public are requested through April 29, 2003.

February 12 : ATSDR's results of investigations in Fallon, Nev., do not indicate a relationship between environmental exposure pathways and leukemia cases in Churchill County.

February 12 : ATSDR released the public comment version of its public health consultation that reviews childhood lead levels in Anniston, Ala. The evidence indicates that average blood lead levels in children tested were below Alabama and national averages. Some children, however, are being exposed to lead. ATSDR recommends continued blood testing programs and activities by parents and the community to prevent exposure. Written public comments are invited through March 21, 2003.

January 30 : ATSDR released the public comment version of its public health assessment for the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant in Doyline, La. The assessment concluded that potential exposures associated with groundwater, surface soil, surface water/sediment and biota pose no past, current or future public health hazards at the site.

January 28 : ATSDR recently released the public comment version of its public health consultation on air sampling for PCBs around the Solutia Inc. property in Anniston, Ala. Written comments from the public will be accepted by ATSDR until March 21, 2003.

January 24 : The public comment version of ATSDR's public health consultation for the View-Master Factory Supply Well site in Beaverton, Ore., is now available. ATSDR concludes that past exposure to TCE through drinking water from the site's well might have resulted in adverse health effects among former View-Master workers. Written comments from the public will be accepted through Feb. 28, 2003.

January 23 : ATSDR's public comment version of its public health assessment for Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., concludes that burning of plant materials during prescribed burns or wildfires at the site could cause air contaminants that might result in short-term adverse health effects. Public comments will be accepted through Feb. 19, 2003.

January 23 : Residents of south-central Washington State during 1944 through 1951, might be interested in ATSDR's Hanford Community Health Project. The project seeks to provide educational information and materials about potential health risks to individuals who were exposed as young children to past releases of radioactive iodine (I-131) from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

January 22 : A new fact sheet from ATSDR updates the Neodesha, Kansas community about its investigation into lead and other contaminants at the Former Amoco Refinery site.ATSDR is looking into potential exposure routes, such as air, soil and groundwater and has met with area residents to hear their health concerns. The results of ATSDR's evaluation will be provided in a written public health consultation.

January 22 : ATSDR's initial public health assessment on the Metachem Products LLC site, in New Castle, Delaware, concludes that the site currently poses no apparent public health hazard. The document is now availabe at several local repositories. ATSDR is accepting public comments through January 31, 2003.

January 10 : ATSDR released seven updated toxicological profiles for hazardous substances found at EPA National Priorities List sites. Five other profiles have been updated and are released for public comment through Feb 24. These will be released as final after ATSDR's review of comments received from the public.

January 8 : ATSDR's Voluntary Research Program Works with Industry Groups To Fill Priority Research Needs on Hazardous Substances: Recent Computer Modeling Study Predicts No Effects of Methylene Chloride on Human Immune System

January 2 : The final public health assessment for the Tri-County Public Airport (TCPA), in Morris County, Kansas, concludes that persons living near TCPA were exposed to contaminated water from residential wells located off the site, via ingestion, inhalation and/or absorption.
