ATSDR MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENT

ATSDR To Hold Public Availability Meeting Jan. 26 Concerning Release
of Health Consultation for Scituate Groundwater Sites, Scituate and Johnston

For Immediate Release: Jan. 16, 2004

ATLANTA - The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, today announced it will hold a public availability meeting on Jan. 26 to inform the Scituate and Johnston, Rhode Island, communities of the release of the public health consultation on the Scituate Groundwater Sites. These sites include areas of Danielson Pike and Peck Hill Road.

The public health consultation finds no apparent public health hazard to residents from chlorinated solvents in groundwater. However, prudent public health practice suggests that continued long-term exposure should be avoided where possible.

The public availability meeting will afford community members the opportunity to meet one-on-one with ATSDR representatives to discuss the findings of the health consultation. The session will be held Monday, Jan. 26, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the North Scituate School, 46 Institute Lane, North Scituate, RI 02857, 401-647-4110.

ATSDR's conclusions and recommendations are included in the health consultation, which is available for review at the following repositories:

Hope Library (Scituate)
374 North Road
Hope, RI 02831

North Scituate Library
606 West Greenville Road

Regional Representative Bill Sweet also may be contacted at 617-918-1490. Callers should refer to the Scituate Groundwater Sites in Scituate and Johnston, Rhode Island.

ATSDR, a federal public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, evaluates the human health effects of exposure to hazardous substances. Established by Congress in 1980 under the Superfund law, ATSDR conducts public health assessments at each of the sites on the EPA National Priorities List, as well as other sites when petitioned. Headquartered in Atlanta, ATSDR is staffed by more than 400 health professionals including epidemiologists, physicians, toxicologists, engineers and public health educators.
