Gastrointestinal (GI) SPOREs

SPORES in GI cancer may focus on any of the several organ sites classified as cancers of the gastrointestinal system, including cancers of the colon, rectum, pancreas, stomach, esophagus, small intestine, liver, gallbladder or other digestive organs. Over 250,600 newly diagnosed cases of cancer of the digestive system, and 132,300 deaths, were expected in the United States in the year 2002, per American Cancer Society estimates. Cancers of the colon, rectum, and pancreas account for the majority of new diagnoses. Patients with cancers of the pancreas have a particularly poor prognosis, as mortality from this type of cancer is extremely high. The GI SPORE program expanded in the year 2002 from two to four funded SPOREs. New SPOREs focusing on cancers of the gastrointestinal system are expected to be added in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
