SCHIP State Programs

CMS administers the State Children's Health Insurance Program. Program benefits became available October 1, 1997, and will provide $40 billion in Federal matching funds over 10 years to help states expand health care coverage to the Nation's uninsured children. SCHIP is a state-administered program and each state sets its own guidelines regarding eligibility and services. Medicaid Summary

The program, known as Medicaid, became law in 1965 as a jointly funded cooperative venture between the Federal and state governments to assist states in the provision of adequate medical care to eligible needy persons. Medicaid is the largest program providing medical and health related services to America's poorest people. The Federal statue identifies over 25 different eligibility categories for which Federal funds are available. These statutory categories can be classified into five broad coverage groups: children, pregnant women, and adults in families with dependent children; individuals with disabilities, and individuals 65 and over.   Read more about Medicaid
