After more than two years of provisional self-government in Kosovo, new elections are due in October and its progress in meeting international standards is up for review in mid-2005. How effective has the current government coalition been? Will Kosovo meet international standards in 2005? On March 17 the Institute's Balkans Working Group sponsored a special public address by Hashim Thaci, chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo.
Moderated by Daniel Serwer, director of peace and stability operations at the Institute, the session explored issues such as:
- What can be done to enable more Serbs to return home?
- How will non-Albanian ethnic groups be treated?
- What practical results will come from the dialogue with Belgrade?
- How will the new Serbian government affect the progress of the talks?
- What does the future hold for Kosovo?
