It is increasingly evident that a strong partnership between the medical and public health sectors is beneficial to the health and well-being of our nation. Such a collaboration exists between the AMA and the Department of Health and Human Services to produce "Roadmaps for Clinical Practice."  The Roadmaps series is intended to assist physicians to adapt to the ever-changing medical landscape and integrate disease prevention and health promotion into routine clinical care.

Series intro: A Primer on Population-Based Medicine
The primer is the introductory volume to the Roadmaps series. It provides an introduction to the concept of population-based medicine as a strategy for integrating disease prevention and health promotion into routine medical care, reducing health disparities, and improving health outcomes.

Case Studies in Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
The case study series includes topical monographs focusing on some of the leading causes of morbidity and premature mortality as identified in Healthy People 2010 (e.g. violence, overweight and obesity, and smoking) and strategies to help physicians address these issues in the clinical encounter and within the community. The monographs will be released at a rate of about two a year.

The second volume of the Roadmaps series, based on the leading health indicators of nutrition and overweight, and physical activity and fitness, offers recommendations and resources for addressing the weight management of adult patients. This primer addresses assessment of overweight and obesity, counseling patients on healthy eating and physical activity, exploring appropriate pharmacotherapy and surgical options, and creating an ideal office environment.

Intimate Partner Violence
The first volume of the Roadmaps series focuses on the leading health indicator of injury and violence prevention. The Intimate Partner Violence Monograph includes recommendations for recognizing the signs of violence between partners, screening and counseling patients, and providing appropriate and sensitive treatment.
