Center for Law and Social Policy. A national non-profit organization which seeks to improve the economic conditions of low income families through education, policy research and advocacy.

Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement. A research organization focusing on improving the reading achievement of American children.

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. A nonpartisan research organization and policy institute that conducts research and analysis on government policies and programs, with an emphasis on those affecting low- and moderate-income people.

FirstGov. The first-ever government website to provide the public with easy, one-stop access to all online U.S. Federal Government resources.

International Reading Association. A worldwide network of over 90,000 reading professionals dedicated to the improvement of reading instruction through conferences, publications, research, and professional development.

Laubach Literacy. A nonprofit educational corporation dedicated to helping adults of all ages improve their lives and their communities by learning reading, writing, math and problem-solving skills. It has volunteer-based programs in over 900 communities nationwide.

Learning First Alliance. An alliance of major national educational organizations dedicated to improving student learning in America's public schools.

Literacy Volunteers of America. A national network of more than 375 locally based programs, supported by state and national staff, committed to changing lives through literacy.

Manpower Demonstration Research Corporation. A nonprofit, nonpartisan social policy research organization.

National Academy Press. Publishes the work of the National Academy of Science, the Institute of Medicine, and other research organizations.

National Alliance of Business. A nonprofit business-led organization seeking innovative, long-term solutions to the challenge of improving workforce quality.

National Adult Education Professional Development Consortium. Aims to advance the leadership of state staff in adult education throughout the states and territories to increase literacy and prepare adults for success as contributing members of our society through work, community and family.

National Association of the Education of Young Children. Works with individuals and groups to achieve healthy development and constructive education for all young children. Primary attention is devoted to assuring the provision of high quality early childhood programs for young children.

National Center on Adult Literacy. Focuses primarily on literacy research, technology, and innovation in North America.

National Center for Family Literacy. A non-profit organization supporting family literacy services for families through programming, training, research, advocacy and dissemination.

National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy. A collaboration of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education and World Education to help the field of adult basic education define a comprehensive research agenda and disseminate research and best practices to practitioners, scholars, and policy makers.

National Coalition for Literacy. An umbrella organization for the advancement of literacy in the United States. As the initiator, promoter, and advocate for national literacy improvement.

National Governor's Association. A bipartisan national organization of, by, and for the nations' Governors.

Thomas. The Library of Congress provided information about federal legislation.

Welfare Information Network. A clearinghouse for information, policy analysis and technical assistance on welfare reform.

Urban Institute. A nonpartisan economic and social research organization.

U.S. Department of Education. Aims to strengthen the Federal commitment to assuring access to equal educational opportunity for every individual.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

U.S. Department of Labor. Responsible for the administration and enforcement of over 180 federal statutes which cover a wide variety of workplace activities for nearly 10 million employers and well over 100 million workers.

VALUE (Voice for Adult Literacy United for Education). A national organization of adult learners (current and former participants in adult basic skills programs) in the United States.

The White House. The Executive Office of the President includes senior policy advisors and offices responsible for the President's correspondence and communications, the Office of the Vice President, the Office of the First Lady, as well as the Office of Mrs. Gore.
