Information Security:
Putting the Pieces Together
February 2 - 8, 2003 has
been designated National Consumer Protection Week to
highlight consumer protection and education efforts
around the country. The subject of this year’s NCPW is
Information Security.
Many
consumers are concerned about
the consequences if they lose control over their
personal or sensitive information. When our personal
information is misused, the risks range from unwanted
intrusions in our daily lives to economic injury – or
even threats to our physical security.
The good news is that we
can practice everyday actions to help secure our
personal information. For consumers or
business people
who use the Internet, strong passwords, firewalls and
up-to-date anti-virus software can go a long way toward
protecting information on our computers from those who
would try to damage a network operation, or worse yet,
steal personal information to commit a crime.
We encourage you to use
the materials on this site to learn more about ensuring
the security of your personal or sensitive information –
online, in your office or around your home. This site
contains tips from the federal, state and local
governments, as well as national advocacy organizations,
on how to protect your personal information, links to
further resources, and a colorful
NCPW poster featuring
Dewie, the Information Security mascot.
