Background Radiation

Radiation arising from radioactive material other than the one directly under consideration. Also see natural background radiation.

Becquerel (Bq)

International System of Units unit of radioactivity equal to the amount of radioactive material that yields one nuclear transformation (disintegration) per second. (1 Bq = 1 disintegration per second = 2.7 X 10-11 Curie).

Beta Particle (b)

A negatively charged particle whose mass and charge are the same as that of an electron. Beta particles are emitted from the nucleus of certain radioactive atoms.

Beta-2-microglobulin

An indicator of potential kidney damage.

Bioassay

Determination of the quantity, type and location of radioactive material in the human body by direct measurement or by analysis of materials excreted or removed from the body.
