Leadership for a Democratic Society
Each executive
will take three courses, one per week, during weeks two through
four. Executives select among four courses each week, with
different courses every week. The selection of courses is
diverse, but all courses fit within at least one (sometimes
more than one) of the four program themes.
Participants
take different courses because they have different needs,
emphasizing the Institute's philosophy that learning must
respond to these individual needs. Courses use a wide range
of learning methods, including readings, lecture and discussion,
exercises, instruments, videotapes, role plays, simulations,
guest speakers, case studies, and visits to organizations
in the local area.
Classes
are generally kept small, with between 15-25 students each,
to promote discussion, facilitate sharing among class members,
and to ensure sufficient time to focus on individual needs.
Course overviews, objectives, teaching formats, and learning
approaches are available for all the courses. Not every course
is offered by every program.
Individual
course descriptions include course overview, objectives, teaching
formats, and learning approaches. Some of these courses fit
within more than one program theme. Courses are currently
grouped within the theme that is most pervasive. Not all courses
are offered in every four-week program.
