The IT in the Home pilot project sought to develop a consolidated information base—for use by SRS, NSF, and the larger research and policy communities—on which to build further knowledge about the application and implications of IT in the home.

IT in the Home Data Sets Annotations

  • Eight major data sets derived from systematic surveys on various aspects of IT in the home were identified. To qualify for inclusion, data sets had to be obtained through valid sampling methods, obtained from samples of the entire U.S. population, and contain more than one year of comparable data.
  • Two meta sites with links to other sources are also included.
  • The annotations include the purpose of the data collection, the survey method, the survey design, the variables collected, the statistical reliability, the means for obtaining the data, and a summary of the key features.

IT in the Home Research Papers and Books Annotations

  • Thirty-two major works were identified, focusing at the home, family, or household level effects of IT, or on individual effects in the context of home computing or personal Internet use. Studies relating to the effects of home IT activities on business or society were excluded, as were works deemed purely philosophical or speculative.
  • To facilitate user searches of the bibliography, studies are identified by keywords that indicate the topics covered in the research.
  • The annotations summarize the purpose of the work, the methodology and the source of the data, and the key findings or features.

Literature Review: The Application and Implications of Information Technologies in the Home: Where are the Data and What Do They Say?

  • This report presents an integrated review of what existing data and research say about the implications of IT in the home.

Issue Brief: Complex Picture of Computer Use in the Home Emerges

  • This issue brief summarizes the key findings of existing data and research about the implications of IT in the home.
