Gift Fund - Donations to the Institute

Can NIA accept donations?
Yes. Although the National Institute on Aging (NIA) is a federally funded organization and not a fund-raising organization, it has been authorized by the U.S. Congress to accept donations and bequests from individuals and organizations who wish to support the Institute’s mission.

Donations to the NIA are deposited in our “Gift Fund” account, which is separate from the appropriations that we receive from Congress. Since NIA’s basic operating expenses and administrative costs are funded from our appropriation, all donations to the NIA are used for special projects in support of aging research, including Alzheimer’s disease research.

How are donations used?
The NIA has supported different projects through the Gift Fund from year to year depending on the needs of the Institute. The following is a partial list of areas that have been supported through the Gift Fund:

  • Research studies in our laboratories
  • Equipment and supplies for laboratories
  • Special training programs for new investigators
  • Research workshops and conferences
  • Printing of materials about aging, including Alzheimer’s disease, for the general public and health professionals

How can someone donate to the Institute?
Individuals and organizations can make a donation to the NIA Gift Fund by check or money order made payable to “National Institute on Aging” or to “NIA.” Donors should send a letter along with the check or money order indicating that the money is to be used to support the mission of the NIA. If the donation is to be made as a memorial, please indicate the name of the deceased as well as a name and address of the individual to whom an acknowledgement can be sent. All donors are acknowledged as well. Donations and letters should be sent to:

    National Institute on Aging
    Financial Management Office
    Building 31, Room 2C06
    31 Center Drive, MSC 2292
    Bethesda, MD 20892-2292

If someone wishes to leave money to the Institute in a will, he or she should provide the address of the NIA in the will and indicate that the bequest is to be used to support the mission of the NIA.

Can donations be made just for Alzheimer’s disease?
Yes. Donations for Alzheimer’s disease research and/or educational activities at the NIA can be accepted also through the Institute’s Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center by following the process outlined above and sending the letter and donation to:

    ADEAR Center
    P.O. Box 8250
    Silver Spring, MD 20907-8250

A letter of acknowledgement is sent to all donors.
