The National Institute on Aging (NIA) supports research and research training related to aging.
The Institute supports basic biological, neuroscientific, behavioral and social research on aging as well as
intervention studies and clinical geriatric research. It does not support provision of services. Although the NIA's
Intramural Research Program conducts research in its own laboratories in Bethesda, Maryland, and at the Gerontology
Research Center in Baltimore, Maryland, the largest part of NIA’s funding for research is extramural. (See NIA's Extramural Programs ). This funding
goes to research institutions, e.g., universities, hospitals, or similar organizations. Information on NIH's overall extramural research programs is available at the Home Page for the
NIH - Office of Extramural Research.
