Institutional Research Training Awards and Individual Fellowships at NIA

Overview

NIA supports predoctoral students and postdoctoral students through institutional training grants. These grants typically support multiple predoctoral or postdoctoral slots or both kinds. Students apply directly to the institution that holds the grant. Faculty at the institution apply for a multi-year training grant from NIA. NIA also supports postdoctoral students through individual fellowship awards. For these applications students apply directly to NIA for funding. Part of the application is prepared by the student’s sponsor – usually the director of the laboratory where the student will be working. NIA has no general individual fellowship award for predoctoral students. However, NIA does support the NIH minority predoctoral fellowship program and the NIH predoctoral fellowship program for students with disabilities. These programs are described under the section: Training for Special Populations.

NIH Training Grants

NIH maintains a site that lists all current training grants supported by the different Institutes of NIH, including the National Institute on Aging. The list is organized by state and by institution within a state and contains the name of the training director, and the title of the grant. The grants supported by NIA have a number that begins with the letters "AG". The list may be used by students or faculty to gain some idea of the kinds of training opportunities available through NIA and other Institutes at NIH.
