Overview
The Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging (NNA) Program supports extramural research
and training to further the understanding of the aging process in the structure and
functioning of the nervous system. An area of special emphasis is the brain-behavior
relationship. An important component of this program is the support of basic, clinical,
and epidemiological studies of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias of aging.
NNA’s program focuses on the neurobiology of aging, neuropsychology of aging, and the
dementias of aging.
More Information
- The National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) held an
informational meeting on April 5, 2004 to review the scientific evidence for the use of neuroimaging techniques
(positron emission tomography [PET], single photon emission tomography [SPECT], and magnetic resonance imaging
[MRI]) in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Topics discussed included what imaging adds
to the accuracy of clinical diagnosis, including differential diagnosis, whether inclusion of imaging procedures
improves patient-oriented outcomes, and the cost-effectiveness of imaging procedures. The meeting was initiated
at the request of CMS, in order to help them evaluate a request for Medicare coverage to include reimbursement
for [F-18] flourdeoxyglucose PET to aid in specified cases in the differential diagnosis of dementia.

- Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (RFA AG-04-005): Working Group Findings
The RFA for the AD Neuroimaging Initiative is available as of October 2, 2003. The findings of the working groups referred to in the RFA are included here.
The working groups were initiated to help NIA identify conceptual and methodological issues important to the development of the initiative. The findings of these groups offer auxiliary information that may be helpful in formulating a response to the RFA.
