The Office of Education (OE) administers a variety of programs and initiatives to recruit and develop individuals who participate in research training activities on the NIH's main campus in Bethesda, Maryland, as well as other facilities around the country. These activities range from internships at the pre-college level through postdoctoral and clinical fellowships. To facilitate the recruitment function, the OE maintains a 2300 page interactive web site http://www.training.nih.gov which chronicles the various research training programs as well as on-line application systems and handbooks for postdoctoral fellows and summer research programs.
In addition to recruitment and development, the OE supports the training mission of the intramural program through placement, retention, support and tracking of trainees at all levels; program delivery and evaluation; and the oversight of Continuing Medical Education (CME), Continuing Education for Psychologists (CE), and Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs to ensure that they are in compliance with national accreditation standards. The OE also administers the NIH Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP), the NIH Academy, the NIH Clinical Electives Program, and the Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (SIP) and the Summer Research Fellowship Program (SRFP).
Academic support activities, many of which are administered in conjunction with the Pre-IRTA and Fellows Committee, include: speaking and writing courses, survival skills workshops, scientific lectures, an annual job fair, career seminars and poster presentation programs for postbaccalauteate and summer trainees. The OE also processes requests for student loan deferments and verifications of training for former fellows.
Staff in the OE are available to assist candidates at every step of the application process, from identifying research laboratories to arranging interviews with prospective preceptors. The OE also serves as a resource for career and educational opportunities, as well as orienting new trainees to the NIH and the national capitol area.
