Search NIH intramural annual reports

Annual Reports from 1998 and afterwards may be searched

Annual Reports from 1999 onwards may have bibliographies associated with them.
1998 Annual Reports will not.

1 Free text search
1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003

Free text search of NIH Annual Reports by year. You may select as many years as you wish to search. As summaries from year to year can be quite similar, 1 it is usually enough to search in a single year.
2 Search Institute/Center reports
1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003

Search within a particular Institute's or Center's Annual Reports 2 This is a free text search, except localized to Annual Reports from a particular Institute/Center. You may select as many years as you wish to search. As summaries from year to year can be quite similar, 1 it is usually enough to search in a single year.

Note - NCCAM searches begin with 2002.

3 Retrieve a report by Z01 number
1 Z01

Show a SINGLE Annual Report, where you know the Z01 (project) number

The report number must be in the following format:
XX012345-09, where

  • XX represents the institute code
  • 012345 represents the individual project number
(prior to 2001, this was a five digit number, now they are 6 digit AND we have converted all prior year report numbers to 6 digit format with a leading ZERO
  • -09 represents the "year code", the number of years the project has been active
  • If you use the wrong format, you will get an error message

Note: In many cases, the names of the collaborators are included as part of the report, but we did not receive this data from some Institutes for particular years. In addition, individual reports from other Institutes/Centers may also lack collaborator information. Therefore the absence of any collaborators from a report most often will mean that the data was not there, not that there weren't any collaborators on that report.

1 Free text search information

  • You can combine author names, keywords, and text terms all in the same request for information.
  • Separate terms with spaces.
  • The search will look only for those reports where EVERY term is found if you leave the "all" popup selected. If you aren't finding any results, search on fewer terms OR change the popup to "any".
  • The search is NOT case sensitive
  • You can combine freely any type of term, including author last names and text terms. First names are not available for 1998, just initials for first names and occasionally, middle names. First names are searchable for Reports starting in 1999.
  • The presence or absence of an apostrophe can throw off any search engine. For example, searching on Hodgkin will return reports that use Hodgkins or Hodgkin's, but a search on Hodgkins will not return reports that use Hodgkin or Hodgkin's. Therefore, you might need to be fairly careful in constructing your search's terms. (That is, you might wish, in the previous example, to change the popup to "any" and search on "Hodgkin Hodgkins Hodgkin's".)
  • You may request the increase of the number of "hits" from 10 to 25.

2 Searching where a particular Institute or Center is specified

  • In this search, once you have indicated the Institute or Center, the search engine will return not only reports from a particular Institute/Center.
  • After entering your search terms, you will see a request on the RIGHT asking if you wish to continue the search on the terms as typed in - you do not need to include the abbreviation for the IC selected. However, to search for collaborators from ANOTHER IC with the one chosen, add the abbreviation from that particular IC. Select the button to complete your request.
  • The comments above for the free text search still apply.
