The Fire 21 Symbol

The triangle shape of the FIRE 21 symbol represents the fire triangle: without the elements of oxygen, heat, and fuel that Image of the Fire 21 logomake up the triangle, fire would not exist. The three outer red triangles represent the basic functions of wildland fire organizations:
  • Planning
  • Operations
  • Aviation management
These small triangles also point inward to the base of the flame, representing three critical aspects of wildland fire management:
  • Prevention
  • Suppression
  • Prescription
The black interior represents land affected by fire, with the emerging green point symbolizing growth, restoration, and sustainability of fire-adapted ecosystems. The flame represents fire itself - and stands as a reminder that fire is an ever-present force in nature. The FIRE 21 inscription stands for our commitment to using wildland fire in a safe and effective manner, now and into the 21st century.

Since 1994, the wildland fire community has witnessed the generation of a large number of wildland fire management report reviews and policy documents.
  • FIRE 21 incorporates the findings from science, research, and innovative thinking, and explains how they affect wildland fire management.
  • FIRE 21 catalyzes information and moves recommendations forward.
  • FIRE 21 symbolizes the safe and effective use of wildland fire, now and into the 21st century.
