NIH Reagents and Repositories

Posted May 2, 2001

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides opportunities for scientists around the world to gain access to bio-material catalogues and cell repositories developed by NIH.  This page contains a list of some of these repositories as compiled by The Fogarty International Center.

The resources in NIH repositories include highly characterized, viable, and contaminant-free cell cultures and high-quality, well-characterized DNA samples derived from these cultures, both subjected to rigorous quality control.  These resources may be accessed by bona fide researchers globally.

Each NIH institute and center has a different mechanism to obtain access to these repositories.  Generally, interested parties must submit an original and one copy of the following documents:

  1. A cover letter containing the name, mailing address, e-mail address, fax number, and telephone number of the principal investigator. This letter should be written on the letterhead of the sponsoring institution at which the research will be conducted, and
  2. The curriculum vitae of the principal investigator and all co-investigators, and
  3. A 1-2 page description of the proposed study, and
  4. A completed distribution agreement, including specification of the research project to be conducted, and signatures of the principal investigator and an authorized representative of the recipient institution.

Faxed documents are usually not accepted.  Please see individual sites for complete application and shipping information and addresses.
