Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and
Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs

The NCCAM SBIR/STTR program is a set-aside program designed to support innovative research conducted by small business concerns (and a research institution if STTR) that has the potential for commercialization of the subject of the research. Innovation and the potential for commercialization are among the important factors in the review criteria used in the scientific and technical merit evaluation process.

NCCAM supports innovative research within five major domains: (1) alternative medical systems (for example, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda); (2) mind-body interventions (for example, meditation, biofeedback); (3) biologically based treatments (for example, herbal therapies, special diets); (4) manipulative and body-based methods (for example, chiropractic, massage); (5) energy therapies (for example, Reiki, qi gong).

NCCAM encourages innovative basic, pre-clinical, and clinical studies that aim to establish the efficacy and safety of CAM modalities as well as their mechanisms of action. We also encourage applications that propose to develop and validate methods for chemical and biological identification of active ingredients in natural products, and to develop standardized, research-grade natural products.

Note: NCCAM will not consider SBIR/STTR applications addressing database creation or maintenance of any kind, software development, or development of educational materials or courses (e.g., CDs, CMEs). We also do not support clinical practice of any kind.
