Mr.
Schiff: Home invasions by a gang of heavily armed thugs was a big problem in Detroit
in 1994...
Mr.
Vandervliet: "There were well over a hundred home invasions by this group
of individuals."
Mr.
Schiff: That's Marty Vandervliet, a Special Agent at the FBI's Detroit office.
He says FBI Agents worked with state and city police...
Mr.
Vandervliet: "What we did was look for patterns between various home invasions
which were being committed all over the city of Detroit, in various precincts
of Detroit, and tried to match them by M.O. We then re-interviewed the victims
and we contacted our sources of information to try and identify any persons who
might be committing these home invasions."
Mr.
Schiff: Vandervliet says some names popped up, surveillance began, and the group
was caught in the act...
Mr.
Vandervliet: "We attempted to stop them and arrest them. However, they rammed
the Detroit Police Department vehicle which was closest to them attempting to
stop them, and a very serious car chase ensured in which five of the six occupants
of that van were shot, one of them fatally."
Mr.
Schiff: No officers or Agents were hurt. Over time, twenty subjects were convicted
and sent to prison. I'm Neal Schiff and that's the FBI's Closed Case of the Week."
