Staffing

The Office of Laboratory Services is staffed by over 120 chemists, document analysts, fingerprint specialists, firearm and toolmark examiners, firearm technicians and administrative support personnel. The forensic laboratories are accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD). In 1985 the ATF Laboratories became the first federal forensic laboratories accredited by this organization. Likewise, the Alcohol and Tobacco Laboratory (ATL) takes the leadership role in the development and use of Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) official methods of analysis. ATL participates in external proficiency testing and is now actively working on laboratory accreditation through the International Standard Organization (ISO).
