Asthma Information Available at OMHRCAsthma affects nearly 15 million Americans, more than 5 percent of the US population. For inner-city African-Americans and Latino populations asthma is a growing concern. Among children and young adults, African-Americans are three to four times more likely than whites to be hospitalized for asthma, and are four to six times more likely to die from asthma. The Department of Health and Human Services recently developed a strategic plan, Action Against Asthma: A Strategic Plan for the Department of Health and Human Services for dealing with asthma. The report identifies urgent needs for research to uncover causes of the asthma epidemic and to develop ways to prevent the disease from occurring.
