A Poll on the thirteenth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) showed that
an overwhelming majority of Americans support key principles of law, but awareness and support
has eroded slightly.
Of the people polled in the
Harris Poll #41,
88 percent supported the idea that public places such as restaurants and stores may not
discriminate against customers on the basis of disability. When the law was enacted ion July 26,
1990, that support was at 95 percent.
In 1999, 63 percent of Americans with disabilities knew about the ADA but in this poll, only 48
percent knew of the law.
