NOTE: 
 ºFor the links in the EOS DATA GATEWAY (EDG) system the browser will display the EDG "Search creation" screen in a new browser window with "DATA SET" list containing data sets selected in respect to their product name. Users can refine their search by editing that list, by selecting geographic coordinates and specifying time limits.

Beta Products are minimally validated, early release products that enable users to gain familiarity with data formats and parameters. Product is probably not appropriate as the basis for quantitative scientific publications.

Provisional Products are partially validated and improvements are continuing. Provisional products are viewed as early science validated products and useful for exploratory and process scientific studies. Quality may not be optimal since validation and quality assurance are ongoing. Users are expected to review products quality summaries before publication of results.

Validated Products have well defined uncertainties. These are high quality products suitable for longer term or systematic scientific studies and publication. There may be later improved versions. Users are expected to review products quality summaries before publication of results.

MODIS Validated Products: Estimates of accuracy and product uncertainty have been obtained through comparisons with independent data.  The extent of validation and attendant confidence in the products are described below.  The results of the product validation are published or in the process of being published in the peer-reviewed literature. The validation data are available. Scientific use is recommended and encouraged commensurate with the stages of validation achieved.

  • Stage 1 Validation:  Product accuracy has been estimated using a small number of independent measurements obtained from selected locations and time periods and ground-truth/field program effort.

  • Stage 2 Validation: Product accuracy has been assessed over a widely distributed set of locations and time periods via several ground-truth and validation efforts.

  • Stage 3 Validation: Product accuracy has been assessed and the uncertainties in the product well established via independent measurements in a systematic and statistically robust way representing global conditions.

NOTICE

The Golden Month: As part of a MODIS policy for maintaining a record of multiple versions of the land products produced over time, the science team agreed to save a “Golden Month” for all collections starting with version 3 (V003).September 2002 has been nominally identified as the Golden Month, and actually includes 40 days of data from August 29 through October 7 (2002241 to 2002280).

Currently released MODIS Land data products represent V004 provisional and validated data sets.
