USGS provides science expertise to Minnesota Wildlife
Strategy
USGS is helping to develop a ten-year plan for Minnesota wildlife, fish, and
invertebrates: the Minnesota Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy.
This comprehensive plan will enhance wildlife and fish populations and habitats,
increase scientific understanding, and improve citizen appreciation of species
in greatest need of conservation. The plan fulfills requirements for the congressionally
funded State Wildlife Grants Program, a nationwide program to protect wildlife
with cost-effective conservation.

USGS completes large river model for Park Service
The USGS recently completed a large river conceptual model for the National
Park Service (NPS) Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network that identifies
important river ecosystem drivers, stressors, and “vital signs” that
must be considered as NPS develops monitoring programs for Midwest riverine
parks. This model provides essential information for designing and directing
a monitoring strategy that concentrates on the most at-risk elements of the
parks. Such monitoring programs allow the public and park managers to track
the ecological health of the park and to take management actions.
