“We work to ensure more livable communities by caring for trees and forests where people live, work, and play.”

Urban and Community Forestry Program enhances the livability of towns, communities, and cities by improving the stewardship of urban natural resources. More partner and contractor information.

Mission Statement:

The USDA Forest Service and State Forestry Agencies, in partnership with national and local organizations provide a comprehensive approach to the stewardship of urban trees and forest resources. This approach helps ensure the vitality of communities by engaging people where they live, work, and play. The Program provides financial and technical assistance to plan, protect, establish, and manage trees, forests, and related resources. The outcome is to restore and sustain the health and quality of the natural and human environments in urban areas.

Goal:

Provide technical and financial assistance to help improve the livability of cities and communities through managing urban forest resources to promote a healthy ecosystem.

Objectives:

  • Provide technical and financial assistance.
  • Strengthen FS and State leadership in the care of urban and community forest resources.
  • Increase transfer of technical information.
  • Increase awareness and education about the importance of healthy urban forest resources.
  • Promote volunteerism and citizen participation.
  • Ensure urban greening efforts are biologically sound and sustainable.

In FY 2003, the focus of the Program will be to:

  • Increase agency capacity by elevating the stature of Urban and Community Forestry (UCF) within the agency.
  • Expand partnerships to strengthen the Forest Service and State UCF Programs and the relationship with their Urban National Forest Coalition to better serve urban constituencies.
  • Expand resources and funding by increasing resources for states and regions to deliver technical and financial assistance.
  • Strengthen research and technology transfer to advance resource analysis and monitoring.
