Stearns Replacement Life Preserver

In a message to type commanders, COMNAVSEASYSCOM 110516Z JUN (NOTAL) announces the Stearns inherently buoyant life preserver (similar to the one pictured) as the replacement for the "kapok" life preserver (NSN: 4220-00-200-0538). The new Stearns Life Preserver life preserver is U.S. Coast Guard approved and costs about one-fourth the existing kapok life preserver. The existing kapok life preserver is still adequate and users are not required to replace it. New requisitions should specify the new Stearns inherently buoyant life preserver. You can get the life preserver with or without accessories.

NSN: 4220-01-485-1135 (Stearns model I600 ORG-NAV) provides only the inherently buoyant life preserver and costs about $50.

NSN: 4220-01-485-1138 (Stearns model I600 ORG-NLT) provides the inherently buoyant life preserver with a flat whistle and distress marker light (ACR electronics, Firefly 2) and costs about $100.

You can obtain the life preserver via either requisition or ordering directly from the following suppliers: Amron International Diving Supply, Escondido, CA 92025, (760) 746-3834 (e-mail: Sales@amronintl.com); or, Mar-Vel Underwater Equipment Company, Pennsauken, NJ 08109, (800) 325-5711. These suppliers are part of the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia Prime Vendor Program. The DSC Philadelphia point of contact is Ralph Lund, (215) 737-4154.

COMNAVSEASYSCOM will update NSTM 077, AELs, and maintenance requirement cards and will provide information on abandon ship and Mk 1 life preserver later.

The NAVSEA POC is Mark Campbell (SEA-05l4) at (202) 781-3619 or e-mail: campbellmr@navsea.navy.mil
