Veterans and Service Organization Roundtable, April 26, 2001

In a roundtable meeting with representatives from several veterans and military service organizations, attendees received presentations from staff members of DoD's Deployment Health Clinical Center and the Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program.

Attendees received an update status of the clinical practice guidelines currently in development; pilot testing is scheduled for this summer. Described as instruction books for physicians and patients, "clinical practice guidelines" provide clinically-driven assessments based on best medical practices and best available medical evidence. The Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs are developing the guidelines to assist health care providers in screening and evaluating servicemembers with health concerns following deployment. An update of DoD's anthrax vaccine immunization program provided information about the program's status. The presentation included information about the availability of the vaccine, VAERS reporting, lessons learned, research initiatives, and communication and education efforts.
