NOVEMBER 2004: National Home Care Month, National Hospice Month Celebrate America's Caregivers

More than 7.5 million Americans receive health care in their homes each day from nearly one million caregivers. Each November, the National Association for Home Care & Hospice celebrates National Home Care Month and National Hospice Month to honor these caregiving heroes who make such a difference in the lives of others. "Helping frail, disabled and dying Americans to stay independent and happy in their homes is our goal," said Val J. Halamandaris, president of NAHC. "Home care professionals and volunteers, along with modern medicine and technology, make it possible for sick citizens to be surrounded by their loved ones and precious mementoes as they live their best quality of life." Final Report of the 3M National OASIS Integrity Project
The 3M National OASIS Integrity Project, sponsored by NAHC, the 3M Corporation, and Fazzi Associates, was designed to help clinicians generate more accurate and consistent responses to the extensive list of Outcome and Assessment Information Set (OASIS) questions. Read the final report.


NAHC Updated Study Shows Small Profits for Medicare Agencies
NAHC staff once again has compiled and tabulated data showing the rates of return for all Medicare-participating home health agencies in the nation. The results of the study show that the average rate of return for Medicare-participating agencies in their latest fiscal year (prior to the October 2002 and April 2003 payment reductions) is 5.17 percent. The average rate of return for rural agencies is plus 1.02 percent.
