EERE Information Center

Did you know...?

The What's Going on in My State? section of the State Energy Alternatives Web site offers information on each state's renewable energy resources, power production, state power projects, local organizations, and state contacts.

The organizations and Web sites below offer state-specific information so you can find someone to help you with your project or figure out what's going on in your state:

Regional and State Organizations

These organizations can help you learn more about your options for buying or making your own clean power in your state:

Sites with State-by-State Information

These sites can help you learn more about your state's renewable energy resources, incentives, policies, projects, and more:

Buying Clean Electricity

  • Green Power Network
State-by-state information on buying clean (or, "green") power in states with competitive electricity markets and through utility green pricing programs. Also includes information on state policies for environmental disclosure, electricity industry restructuring, and net metering.

The Green Power Network is a service of the U.S. Department of Energy.

  • Green-e: Renewable Electricity Certification Program
Links to clean power generators, by state, that meet Green-e's voluntary standards. These guidelines were established to help customers easily identify quality clean electricity products.

Green-e is a program of the Center for Resource Solutions, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting renewable energy and economic and environmental sustainability.

  • Power Scorecard
Comprehensive listing of power generators in certain states. Also includes product comparisons and ratings to assess the environmental impact of both clean and conventional energy products from different companies.

Created by Environmental Defense, the Izaak Walton League, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the NW Energy Coalition, the Pace Energy Project, and the Union of Concerned Scientists. Read more about the missions of these organizations.

Solar Technologies (Photovoltaics and Solar Water Heating)

  • A Consumer's Guide to Buying a Solar Electric System (PDF 704 KB) Download Acrobat Reader
1999 publication with information on how much photovoltaic (PV) systems cost, and how much they will save you. Includes a sidebar with a simple way to calculate electricity bill savings for a net metered PV system. State-specific versions of this document are available.

Booklet produced for the U.S. Department of Energy by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

  • Customer-Sited Photovoltaics: State Market Analysis
2002 DOE-funded report examining the economics of residential photovoltaic systems on a state-by-state basis. The report considers each state's typical electricity costs, incentive programs, and solar resources, and then ranks each state based on the amount a PV system can cost per kilowatt of capacity and still pay for itself over its expected lifetime.

From the non-profit Interstate Renewable Energy Council.

  • Solar Maps
Interactive map of solar resources across the U.S. Also includes month-by-month resource maps.

From the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

  • Solar Radiation Data Manual for Flat-Plate and Concentrating Collectors
Online data manual that provides monthly and yearly average solar radiation data for flat-plate and concentrating solar collectors tilted at different angles (note that the data can be used to evaluate your solar resource for flat-plate photovoltaic and solar water heating collectors). The data, which is available for cities across the United States, can be downloaded into a spreadsheet, and includes a manual explaining how the data was calculated and how to use it. Also includes maps of the U.S. solar resource (annual and monthly). Note that solar systems are only able to use a certain percentage of the available solar radiation (due to efficiency factors), so be sure to take this into account when calculating your solar resource.

From the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
