The Office of Communications (OC), NIMH, contributes to the Institute's mission of improving
the mental health of the the Nation through: (1) dissemination of scientific findings
emerging from research; and (2) communication of information aimed at improving
the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and brain disorders. By demonstrating
that these illnesses are real, common, and treatable, OC helps to ensure that
the stigma attached to these conditions will be lessened and people who suffer
from them will be more likely to seek needed treatment. OC provides information
on mental health research and mental disorders to a variety of audiences, including
the media, health care professionals, and the public. A range of informational
resources can be provided on specific subjects such as schizophrenia; bipolar
disorder, depression, and related disorders; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
and learning disabilities; panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other
anxiety disorders; research on mental illnesses, the brain, neuroscience, and
behavior.
