On October 28, 2003, Michael E. Kilpatrick, M.D., deputy director, Deployment Health Support Directorate and Robert E. Sheridan, M.D., United States Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) addressed the Department of Veterans Affairs' Research Advisory Committee. Dr. Kilpatrick provided an overview briefing on the Department of Defense's current medical research program. Dr. Sheridan provided a briefing on USAMRICD research on Low-Level Chemical Warfare Agent Exposure: Effects and Countermeasures.

On July 9, 2003, Dr. William Winkenwerder, Jr., Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, addressed the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations concerning the pre- and post-deployment health assessment processing of troops recently deployed to the Persian Gulf. Students from the Presidential Classroom program attended a briefing about force health protection given by Michael E. Kilpatrick, M.D., the deputy director, Deployment Health Support. These students, chosen for their academic achievement and community involvement, came from around the United States and overseas to participate in a week-long workshop focused on science, technology and public policy. Dr. Kilpatrick spoke about the three pillars of force health protection; a healthy and fit force, casualty prevention and casualty care and management. He highlighted the new medical command and control center and medical surveillance system, the Joint Medical Workstation, pre- and post-deployment health assessments and the clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Kilpatrick also answered questions from the students about mental health issues, SARS and the types of medical issues facing servicemembers involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom. View Briefing

On March 28, 2003, Michael E. Kilpatrick, M.D., Deputy Director, Deployment Health Support Directorate, traveled to Chicago to participate in a forum on Critical Issues & Innovations for Post-Deployment Health Care for VA clinicians hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Kilpatrick provided a briefing on Force Health Protection issues at the Chicago VA Medical Center which included medical issues, health assessments, technology and Gulf War lessons learned as they relate to current deployments. On the afternoon of March 27, 2003, at the request of the U.S. State Department, Michael E. Kilpatrick, M.D., the Deputy Director for the Deployment Health Support Directorate, traveled to New York to brief members of the foreign press at the United Nations on the Department of Defense's use of depleted uranium.
