Welcome to the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA)
Welcome to the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) Home Page. As
part of the Immediate Office of the Secretary, our mission
is to facilitate communication regarding Health and Human Services (HHS)
initiatives as they relate to state, local, and tribal governments. IGA
is the Departmental liaison to state governments, and serves the dual
role of representing the state and tribal perspective in the federal policymaking
process as well as clarifying the federal perspective to state, and tribal
representatives. In facilitating this interaction, our office works directly
with the states, as well as with several organizations
representing state, local, and tribal governments.
In recent years, much of the
communication has been related to health care and welfare
reform. HHS allows states to perform demonstrations to test
different types of reform. As a liaison, IGA works with state
and local governments to facilitate the application and
approval process for grant waivers and program planning. For
more information on these topics, please visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services and the Administration for Children and
Families web sites.
Our office also coordinates ten Regional
Offices and represents HHS on several key
interagency initiatives.
Please get to know our Director,
Deputy Directors,
Secretary's Regional Directors,
staff and their areas of expertise.
