Consider the Possibilities

Join a Dynamic Scientific Community

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) employ thousands of scientists at the cutting edge of every area of medical and behavioral research in 27 Institutes and Centers. These scientists serve in a variety of professional laboratory and research administrative positions, helping NIH fulfill its mission to support and conduct medical and behavioral research. Our scientists belong to one of the world’s most vigorous and diverse research communities. They also work in one of the premier areas in the nation: Montgomery County, Maryland, a thriving, cosmopolitan county just outside of Washington, DC.

Help Shape the Future of Your Field

The NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR) is actively seeking scientists to fill several openings for Scientific Review Administrators (SRAs). These individuals play pivotal roles in ensuring that the NIH peer-review process identifies the most promising research grant applications. The work of the SRAs is highly valued by NIH and the scientific community because the single most important factor in determining whether a grant application is funded by NIH is how well it fares in peer review. This is not a casual relationship. SRAs use their scientific expertise as well as their communication and interpersonal skills to (1) analyze the scientific content of grant applications; (2) identify the scientists invited to serve on study sections and assign the applications each member will review, (3) organize and run peer-review meetings to assess grant applications, and (4) provide applicants with a succinct written summary statement explaining how the review committee viewed the applications.

Enjoy the Benefits

NIH regards the SRAs as key professionals and encourages them to remain current in their field by attending scientific meetings and conferences and obtaining additional training to further their professional development. CSR SRAs enjoy all the many benefits of Federal government employment and earn a salary comparable to many faculty positions in the medical and behavioral fields.

SRAs are usually required to have post-doctoral experience and grant application experience. They are expected to be familiar with both their specific scientific discipline and the principal scientists working in it.
