EXPORTS, IMPORTS, and TRADE BALANCE

KEY TRENDS
  • Furniture accounted for over three-quarters of the growth in total U.S. imports of miscellaneous manufactures in 2003, with China accounting for 80 percent of the increase in furniture imports.
  • Mexico and Canada increased exports of motor vehicle seat parts to their NAFTA partner in 2003 as final assembly of vehicle seats and interior modules was more frequently performed in the United States.
  • Many miscellaneous manufactures are produced in Asia under license from U.S. companies; 64 percent of U.S. sector imports in 2003 were supplied by Asia.
  • U.S. imports of video game consoles declined as the market for the current generation of games matured. All three producers of video game consoles (Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft) introduced their latest models in late 2001 and early 2002.
