Board Member Johnson to Tour Rochester Credit Unions and Meet with Local NY District Members

January 13, 2003, Alexandria, Va. -- National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board Member JoAnn Johnson will spend Wednesday, January 15, 2003, in Rochester, N.Y., visiting credit unions to learn first-hand how they serve their members and communities. In the late afternoon, Johnson will address a group of local credit union officials to gather input and share her perspective on salient regulatory issues.

Mrs. Johnson will begin her day visiting four various size and type credit unions. She will then attend a reception and address a dinner meeting hosted by the Rochester District of Credit Unions. Johnson will discuss the agency’s role in providing programs and resources for small credit unions, her continued work with the member business loan rule and the field of membership proposal. The Rochester district has invited the Albany, Buffalo, Finger Lakes, Niagara Falls, and Syracuse district credit unions to attend the meeting being held at the Monroe Country Club in Pittsford, NY.

President George W. Bush nominated JoAnn Johnson to a seat on the NCUA Board and the U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination March 22, 2002. A former teacher, Johnson was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1994. Chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee and the Commerce Committee, Johnson was an Iowa state senator when appointed to the NCUA Board.

A three-member board appointed by the President governs the National Credit Union Administration. NCUA is the independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, also operates and manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), insuring the deposits of over 80 million account holders in all federal credit unions and the overwhelming majority of state-chartered credit unions.
