NCUA to Host Access Across America Workshop in San Francisco

Focus is on partnering opportunities to foster home ownership

February 14, 2003, Alexandria, Va. – National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Chairman Dennis Dollar announced today that the agency will sponsor an Access Across America workshop in San Francisco for credit union officials who want to learn more about partnering to provide financial services, particularly home ownership in underserved areas. Credit union leaders and volunteers are invited to attend a workshop about partnering with the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation (NRC) and its NeighborWorks® Network.

Who:

NCUA Board Member Deborah Matz
California Credit Union League
CU Association of the West

What:

Hosting a credit union workshop in San Francisco to encourage credit unions to partner with NeighborWorks® organizations to promote home ownership for low-and moderate-income families in underserved areas.

Where:Grand Hyatt, Union Square, 345 Stockton Street, San Francisco

When: April 1, 2003, 8:30 – 4:00

Why:

To educate credit unions about opportunities for strategic partnerships to expand credit union services and increase homeownership

“While credit unions have been a significant source of mortgage lending over the years, they are positioned to build on that impressive record by providing millions of additional Americans with access to attain the American Dream of homeownership,” said Dollar. “Furthermore, NCUA is pleased to continue to support the President’s goal of increasing minority homeownership across America. We are also pleased to join with Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation as a partner in sharing valuable information on resources available to credit unions which can help folks from all walks of life in their neighborhoods to become homeowners.”

“Edward Filene brought credit unions to America in the 20th Century to fight usury and ensure people with limited incomes have a safe place to save and borrow. Nearly a hundred years later, some 56 million adults do not have access to reasonably-priced financial services. This workshop is intended to help credit unions fill this void and make homeownership a reality,” NCUA Board Member Deborah Matz said.

“I’m honored to represent NCUA on the Neighborhood Reinvestment Board and am delighted to cosponsor, along with the CU Association of the West and the California Credit Union League, NCUA’s second workshop with NCR and its affiliated neighborhood housing groups,” Board Member Matz said.

“Our goal is to provide credit unions the knowledge and opportunity to partner effectively with NCR in order to expand home ownership in underserved communities. Financial stability makes all the difference in peoples’ lives and combining the credit union spirit of “people helping people” with NCR mortgage lending know-how is a perfect fit,” said Matz.

Access Across America is the agency’s initiative for creating economic empowerment and expansion of credit union service into underserved neighborhoods and communities.

The National Credit Union Administration, governed by a three-member board appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, is the independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, operates and manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, insuring the deposits of more than 80 million account holders in all federal credit unions and the majority of state-chartered credit unions.

The Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation is a congressional chartered, public nonprofit corporation created to build strong communities. The NRC board is comprised of representatives from the five federal financial regulatory agencies and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
